Back Creek Builders was co-founded by Eric Young and Jason Gelblum, two longtime friends who first met on a pickleball court but soon discovered a shared vision beyond the game: building homes where families can create lasting memories. With backgrounds in real estate and development, and a deep appreciation for quality craftsmanship, they founded Back Creek Builders to restore integrity, creativity, and value to the home-building process.

Jason Gelblum co-founded Back Creek Builders and serves as Chief Operating Officer, managing operations, client relationships, and project coordination across the company's portfolio. He brings roughly nine years of professional experience spanning leadership roles, real estate, operations, and construction management.
Eric Young co-founded Back Creek Builders and serves as President, overseeing construction planning and project execution across the company's residential and sport court work. His background spans real estate development and hands-on construction management, giving him a perspective on projects from initial land evaluation through final walkthrough.
David Stockum is a partner at Back Creek Builders who brings deep experience in residential and commercial restoration, operations, and construction management. Every home is unique, but most custom homes require 12 to 18 months from groundbreaking to completion, with timelines varying based on size, complexity, and site conditions. Permitting can add weeks or months before construction begins, depending on the jurisdiction and any special reviews required for waterfront properties or historic adjacencies. Weather also affects scheduling, particularly for foundation work and exterior finishes. We develop realistic timelines during the planning phase and communicate adjustments as projects progress. The design and selection process before construction can also take several months, so clients should plan for a two-year horizon from initial consultation to move-in.
Most clients remain in their homes during renovation, and we plan accordingly. Dust containment systems isolate work areas from living spaces. We establish clear work zones and maintain access to essential areas, such as bathrooms and sleeping quarters, whenever possible. Kitchen and bathroom projects require the most adjustment because those rooms are used daily. We discuss timing and phasing during planning, so your household understands what to expect before demolition begins, rather than encountering disruptions as they occur.
We work closely with trusted manufacturers whose products have consistently performed well for our clients. We often use Pella for windows and doors, and James Hardie is a preferred choice for exterior siding and trim. You’ll frequently see Kohler fixtures and products sourced through Ferguson for plumbing and hardware throughout our projects. In bathrooms and other wet areas, we commonly install Schluter waterproofing systems and Sherwin-Williams finishes for interior and exterior surfaces. For framing and core building materials, we regularly work with 84 Lumber. Our relationships with these suppliers are rooted in years of testing their products in Maryland’s climate, including the coastal exposure and humidity typical of Annapolis-area homes.
Possibly, and the assessment matters more than assumptions either way. We evaluate moisture conditions before proposing any finishing work by testing humidity levels, examining walls and floors for signs of water intrusion, and reviewing exterior drainage patterns. Some basements stay dry without intervention. Others require interior drainage systems, sump pumps, vapor barriers, or exterior waterproofing before finishing makes sense. Skipping this evaluation risks mold development, material failures, and wasted investment. If waterproofing is needed, we address it first. If conditions are already suitable, we proceed directly to finishing. The assessment determines the right path forward.
Tennis courts require substantial site work before any playing surface goes down. We begin with the excavation and installation of a compacted aggregate base. This foundation prevents settling and cracking that undermine courts built on shortcuts. Reinforced concrete slabs are poured with a precise slope for drainage, typically around one percent side-to-side. After sufficient curing time, acrylic surfacing is applied in multiple coats to establish the playing surface with the appropriate texture. Net posts are set in concrete sleeves at regulation positions. Perimeter fencing, typically ten feet high, is added as well. The full footprint for a single court with proper surrounds runs approximately 60 by 120 feet.
